Barely a decade old, dubstep is one of the newer genres that have taken the electronica world by storm. What some might describe as “dark,” I find sexy. Often having beat breakdowns, intense buildups and melodic lyrics, it’s one of my favorite sounds on the dance floor and can be one of the most complicated genres to DJ.

Although dubstep was born in the U.K., producers from around the world have begun to emerge. Based in Los Angeles, one of the most highly acclaimed is John Dadzie, who goes by the stage name 12th Planet and is known for his energetic sets filled with originally produced music. I was lucky enough to catch his set at the Digital Wonderland on Saturday, April 30, at Wet ‘n’ Wild and get a few answers out of him in between his North Shore and Waikiki adventures.

As he took the stage last weekend, the audience of at least 2,000 people screamed. Within the first 15 minutes of his set, he jumped onto the turntable booth to encourage the crowd. He was everything I had heard about him and as a performer he surpassed my expectations .

Q: Dubstep is pretty complicated if you think about the layers of bass and drum patterns. On average, how long does it take you to produce a track?

A: Dubstep is not that complicated when you think about it. There is a specific way to arrange the music, with very straight-to-the-point parameters to make it qualify to be that genre. The thing with me is, I don’t have an average time it takes to make a song because I am all over the place. Sometime it can be as fast as three hours, sometimes it can take weeks, some songs take months. It all depends on how I am feeling and how long it takes to catch a vibe on the track.

Q: You changed your name from Infiltrata to 12th Planet. Why?

A: Infiltrata was a Drum & Bass moniker and 12th Planet was my dubstep alias. The significant reason for that was to keep the branding centralized to the specific genres.

Q: Is this your first time to Hawaii? Is there anything that you’ve done or want to do while you’re in the islands?

A: This is my third time to Oahu and my favorite pastime is heading to Laniakea or Turtle Bay and swimming with the turtles!

Q: You’re currently based out of L.A. Do you do most of your production there? What kind of programs or gear would you want to make your dream studio?

A: I do most of my solo production in Los Angeles, but I do most of my collaborations in whatever studio or town I am in. My dream studio would have an iPhone app that read my mind and did whatever needed to be done, like emails, interviews, etc.

Q: Do you think that dubstep has crossed over to mainstream?

A: I don’t feel dubstep has crossed over to mainstream. The minute I hear dubstep on KIIS FM, and see No. 1 videos on MTV, then we can have this conversation.

Q: As a highly praised producer, where do you see yourself in the dubstep scene?

A: I see myself as just another person trying to spread the word of this UK music!

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Do you think the music will progress into another genre?

A: I see myself dead in 10 years from lack of sleep. If the music follows the same course its predecessor did, then it should be around another 10 years, easy.

Q: Which dubstep producer most influenced you when you first began producing? Has that role model changed?

A: Without a doubt, Skream. I studied his bass rhythms, drum patterns and learned the art of dubstep from his songs. I think the role has changed now. I think I just try and create songs in the image and likeness of whatever I am feeling now, as opposed to trying to sound like an artist I am not. I think I just came out of my shell after all these years.

Q: For many years, the dubstep scene in Hawaii was — how do I say this — very “hippie” heavy. Do you see a difference in the crowd attendees around the world?

A: For the most part, I feel the dubstep scene has gotten younger in North America and also Down Under. It has gone from a very high rate of 21-plus people at dubstep parties to the audience being majority high school and early collegiate people.

Q: Is there anyone who you’ve sampled from who you would want to meet in real life?

A: I don’t sample.

Q: Tell me about some new projects you’re working on. Any new vocalists or collaborations?

A: I just finished a song with KoRn and two songs with Skrillex. I am in the process of working on an album so expect some new stuff toward the end of the year.

Q: You’ve got a pretty heavy tour going on. How do you keep up with the traveling? Any tips on how you stay healthy?

A: I drink a lot of water and I learned the art of sleeping on airplanes.

Q: Do you have any words of advice to new dubstep producers just getting into the production?

A: Stay in school!

"What the f*** is a Munchi?" is the question that everyone wants to know the answer to. We're in the mist of figuring that out for ourselves. The Hot Muffins got a chance to interview up and coming producer Munchi before he comes to the islands next week.

What inspired you to start producing music?

“When I was 3 my brother made music with his G-Funk group…so since I was 3 I kind of knew that I wanted to make music. His group broke off and he didn’t really made music after that. Which inspired me even more.
But in 2002 my brother gave me this CD with a thing called Acid Pro. I didn't take it seriously.
But everything changed when I heard this thing called Reggaeton. So I downloaded a crack version of the latest Acid Pro and went on from there.”

Do you play any instruments?

"A little bit guitar, because I wanted to make Bachata, but I really suck at playing it.”

In what type of environment do you feel most creative / productive?

“Honestly, I feel most creative when I’m drunk. So usually before or after a gig.”

What's the best part about traveling and DJing across the world?

“You get to meet so many people, see different places. It's funny though, because
everywhere you go it seems that everyone is the same. That kind of makes you feel at home. You know?”

Are you excited about DJing in Hawaii?

“Yeah! I’ve never been to Hawaii. I’ve seen stuff like flower necklaces and girls doing hula on T.V. But that’s probably the same stereotype as Holland with the tulips, cheese and wooden shoes. But yeah, I’m looking forward to partying and get drunk with the Hawaiians.”

You're quite known for your Moombahton edits & originals. How do you feel about how quick the world is catching on to the new genre?

“I think it has to do with that the genre grew really fast in 6 months.
Moombahton evolved so much in those 6 months, where other genres take 1 or 2 years. But still, it’s incredible.”

You're originally from Rotterdam. But you've been traveling the U.S for a couple of months what do you do keep from being homesick?

“Remind myself why I’m doing this.”

Any collaborations or projects you're working on you can tell us about?

“Shh, it's a secret!”

Last year you released an EP every month in a different genre tell us more about that.

“I did that because I used to make a lot of tracks every day in all these different genres, and I was tired seeing it on my pc. Also I wanted people to hear my music so I decided to just give it out for free. So I released a free promo every month, each time in a different genre, and people caught on.”

You know The Hot Muffins had to hop on this Moombahton train! Apparently the rest of the world is about to or already doing the same. The new genre created by no other than Davenada (half of Nadastrom) himself. Nada's new creative sound lit up like a chain reaction! All around the world producers have been pushing their own Moombahton edits and originals and people are eating it up! Let's all thank Davenada for taking the time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us.

Let's dive into the questions:

1. It seems like Moombahton happened so naturally. Are you working on "fine tuning" it, or creating a structure for other producers to follow or do you feel that Moombahton has grown to what it will always be/sound?

"I feel like Moombahton has and continues to progress naturally. What began as a couple of edits catering to a Latin crowd in mind has developed into a really strong and refreshing sound with tons of new elements involved, yet still centered on that mid tempo, global bass foundation. I’m working on pushing the sound creatively with my partner Matt Nordstrom from Nadastrom- our DJ duo group as well as collaborating with other DJs and producers who love Moombahton.

2. Are you production partners, or business affiliated with Munchi? How did that relationship come about?

"Right now we're just bros. I've been a fan of his music since he released his promo Moombahton EP early last year. Ever since then we've kept in contact and look forward to working with each other, whether in the club, studio, or at the bar. lol. He’s a bright cat with lots of potential and I’d love to see him continue to kill it!"

3. I like Moombahton because the BPM often allows me to mix into hip-hop, do you think this sound could be the cross between the two genres of hip-hop and electro?

"Most definitely. To me, Moombahton is the new hip-hop, the new house, the new punk rock, the new everything. It continues to offend and break the rules, like every good, music should. There are already artists from the hip-hop and electro community embracing it and I feel like it'll only get stronger. The tempo is also a huge selling point for DJ's, producers, and dancers alike. I love playing all kinds of music, so Moombahton has been a nice bridge in mixing all sorts of genres. Plus, Moombahton has brought the "grind" back to dem dance floors haha."

4. What programs do you use? Tractor? Abelton?

"I use Serato to DJ and Ableton Live, Reason and Logic for production."

5. Any new artist you're working with?

"There are lots of new collaborations that I can't really mention at the moment, but new artists I’m working with that are really starting to make moves are Dillon Francis and Billy The Gent. awesome DJ's and producers with killer tunes on the way."

6. Ever been to Hawaii? Anything special you'd want to do here?

"Yes! I’ve been to Hawaii and it was amazing. 2009 I stayed in Waikiki and totally chilled harder than I’ve ever chilled before in my entire life. I also swam with dolphins, ate spam and went ice skating with my friend ESKAE and his crew, the Nocturnal Sound Krew. Good times."

7. What’s your favorite muffin?

"I'm a big fan of banana and blueberry. I love berriezzz."

8. Which gigs do you prefer, raves or nightclubs?

"Both have their ups and downs. I think I prefer the intimacy of a nightclub. It's more up close and personal and something about being in a dark lil' club with a bunch of fr33ks gets me stoked."

9. Do you ever wake up and think "wow, I have started something new, & could take over the world?"

"Every damn day!"

But only til recently we've decided he was Muffin Man material when we saw him in

Hey Hot Muffins & Muffin Men this week for Music Review Thursday we got an interview in with Alex from LexiconDon! Got some info on their debut album "Pink + Blue" AND what the groups' been up to.

Tell me a little about when LexiconDon got together. How long have you been a group?

"Fabian and I met at a studio in Hollywood appropriately named Hollywood Sound. I had actually been rapping since I was like 16 and Fabian was producing Hip-Hop tracks. I don't remember specifics but we ended up recording a song called "The Secrets out" and the rest was history. We recorded a full length rap album, but about a year later wrote the song "Staying with My Girl" that would initially change our whole style. Matteo and Sam came a little over a year later, and have improved the live show by a hundred thousand trillion."

Do you prefer to be called a band?
"Of course. Though only Fabian and I produce and write the music (for now) we're much more a band than anything else."

How would you describe your sound?
"Its like sliding down a rainbow water slide with starburst filled skittle stars in the sky lighting up the night with raindrops falling in slow motion as a purple sunrise appears in a palm tree polluted horizon."

Tell us a little about your most memorable show. (:
"Our most memorable show, to me at least, was actually our worst show we ever played. Everything sounded like shit on stage, I couldn't hear anything in the monitors, the drums were way too loud, and I had drank far too much to be performing. At one point I was in the corner almost in tears yelling into the mic how much I hated the venue. Anyway it's my favorite show because I can look back and see how far we have come from then to now, and its fun to laugh about."

When was the released? Where can we direct our viewers to purchase it?
"P+B was released August 24th on Dub Frequency /Binary. It can be purchased on itunes and Amazon. A lot of the songs can be downloaded for free from blogs on hype machine though. So if you don't want to buy it, go grab it for free and burn a couple copies for your friends while you're at it."

When writing music where do you gather inspiration?
"Day to day shit. Girl problems, funny quotes, things I read, the way my car sounds. I draw a lot of inspiration from friend's lives too. Like if mine is too boring to write something catchy I might borrow other peoples' problems. I really like to keep the songs personal as much as possible. Pink + Blue is like a scrap book of the last two years of my life. I want every song to have a healthy story behind it."

Are you guys working on anything at the moment?
"We have been drinking a lot, pill popping every once in a while. Really into World of Warcraft at the moment. We're always working on new stuff."

Is there anyone special you'd like to do a collab with?
"4 people-David Byrne, Rick Ross, Stephan Jenkins, and Robert Smith."

Is there anywhere in particular you guys wants to play? How bout Hawaii?
"Hawaii would be incredible I have never been before and it looks so beautiful when I watch DOG The Bounty Hunter."

TITTSWORTH

We're so glad to have finally get some time in with long time Hot Muffin friend, Tittsworth. A innovative DJ/Producer based in Washington D.C. We gladly listened as he shared his up and coming projects and let us in on some personal thoughts about the producing business. Oh..and we finally got a hint of who Joey Mazzola is and what he would do.

HM: I know you must get this all the time but I have to ask cause it's just so tempting. Why 'Tittsworth'?

TITTS: It's my real last name. can we make shirts w/ my drivers license on
it? would you wear one? would you marry someone w/ my last name?

HM: Actually…Yeah. That’s a pretty dope name.

HM: How long have you been djing? What inspired you to start?

TITTS: Since the mid 90's.. I collected and love music and feel in love w/
the idea of putting random bits of it together. That and I can't
really dance or sing. How else am I gonna keep it real, son?

HM:A year or so ago you came out with your debut album '12 steps' what made you want to produce? or have you always been producing music on the side?

TITTS: I enjoyed creating new things, originally for my friends to rap over.
it was exciting to flip bits and create music w/o any formal
knowledge. Eventually it became a way to produce original stuff for
my sets. i have been producing and djing for roughly the same amount
of time but definitely have put more time into the djing side (until
recent years)

HM: Are you working on anything at the moment?

TITTS: A single w/ Q-tip and Theophilus. A HEAVY sounding ep w/ Alvin Risk

HM:What's your most memorable dj experience? Where?

TITTS: Of recently, Tokyo comes to mind... really fun crowd, great sound and
the recording came out pretty good despite my repetitive over excitable
"MC'ing!" Overall playing at my own club U STREET MUSIC HALL
obviously is an experience all its own.

HM: What's your favorite muffin?

TITTS: Muffin tops. Durian corn muffins.

HM: You seem like a busy man with all your traveling and collaborations other extremely creative artists. What do you do to stay grounded?

TITTS: Kick it w/ my fam that will call me out when I’m gettin out of
character. Try to surround myself w/ real folk, ya know?

HM:All of new technology has been entering the DJ world. Where do you see the DJ scene in about 10 years? What would you like to change/stay the same?

TITTS: Producing is increasingly a bigger deal.. technical stuff will likely
not be as much (beat matching, proper engineering, etc). Instead
bigger picture stuff like set building, flow, creating of original
content, live experience, etc. will be more important

HM:Your twitter feed is hilarious. Where do get all your tweeter inspiration?

We all know who Nicki Minaj is. Yes? She's a female rapper from Queens, a Young Money princess and currently the head bitch running the rap game right now. The first time I heard of Nicki Minaj was in the beginning of last year. Her then hit song 'Itty Bitty Piggy' was my jam! She's made it a long way since then though. From collaborations from Kanye West to Natasha Bedingfield & winning numerous awards for a few of her singles. But to get back on topic her very anticipated debut album titled 'Pink Friday' is coming out on November 22. Unfortunately it was leaked this past Wednesday. How do albums get leaked? Marketing strategy maybe? I do not know...it baffles me.

Back on the topic of Pink Friday. It's very versatile. A split personality feel almost...She has some R&B songs like 'Fly' featuring Rihanna, some pop songs like 'Right Thru Me' & 'Your Love' then she switches it up and go all hard on songs like 'Romans Revenge' featuring Eminem and 'Did it on 'em'. This album is pretty much for anyone that enjoys pop-ish rap and anyone that can handle her thousands of different impersonations. If I had to pick a favorite there'd be a tie between 'Blazin' featuring Kanye West & 'Did It On 'Em'. The album starter 'I'm The Best' gave me mixed emotions...lol. First I thought the song was about inspiring young women into being all they can be and how she's created the way but then, she started shouting she's the best. Who knows. This album was obviously made not to be over analyzed. I think Nicki was just going for a lively, boisterous, multifaceted album everyone can dance and have a good time to. If that's what she's aiming for she get's an A+. If you're looking for a true, deep meaningful lyrical masterpieces you won't find it here. My suggestion to you is pick up this album on November 22, go out and buy a bucket of margarita mix, call all your girls/guys? over and have a good time.

Hey Muffinettes and Muffin Men! This week's Music Review is BAD NEWS for rap dudes. Producer Ian Kai or a.k.a Bad News Rap Dudes is Hawaii's very own! You know The Hot Muffins love supporting local artists! Also..did I mention today is his BIRTHDAY?! Anyway we had a short, informative interview with this jiggy man. You know how we do!

What got you into producing?
"I was always into music. Especially rap and hip hop. Growing up my older used to always play it when she was in high school and I really admired the beat aspect of it all but wasn't quite sure how to actually create beats. In middle school my friends and I started a rap group..we sucked. It didn't last long but during that time I joined a website where underground, unsigned MC's would share with each other their music...also on the site there was a forum on producing. Basically I just asked some random guy how he made beats and he sent me a link to download a program hahaa."

What are your favorite genres?
"Anything BUT country, real heavy music and jawaiian. It's a bit repetitive."

Which producers work do you specifically admire?
"Kanye, DJ Premiere, Pete rock, J Dilla....9th Wonder and Alchemist."

Most important question of all. What's your favorite muffin?
"Hot Muffins" haha

Is there anything you want for your birthday? Any cool gear?
"No not really anything."

Working on anything in particular?
" A few remixes. I'm constantly making beats. It's an never ending thing."
